Williams Wins First Little Three Title Since 2000 With Today's 13-7 Victory Over Wesleyan

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN,CT––Williams (8-4/4-3 NESCAC) defeated Wesleyan (3-9/0-7 NESCAC) 13-7 to win their first Little Three title since 2000. The game was also a marked response to last year's 9-8 loss, which was the Cardinal's first victory over the Ephs since 1983. The Ephs lead the all-time series 28-5.

Wesleyan came out flying, scoring the first goal of the game three minutes into the first half. Senior Tracey Ferriter and sophomore Katie Ellis combined to score two minutes after the Cardinals, starting an avalanche of Eph goals. Senior co-captain Whitney Thayer scored three more goals for the Ephs, and Ellis assisted on two of them. Freshman Sam Weinstein, sophomore Margie Fulton, and junior Anne Marie Burke each scored a goal to bring the score to 6-1. Head Coach Chris Mason said “they scored the first goal, but then we came right back and did a good job building on the lead.”

The Williams offense was interrupted by another Wesleyan goal at 5:59, but Ferriter once again responded in a timely fashion. The Cardinals registered one more goal before the close of the half, but Fulton and fellow sophomore Meera Sivalingam collaborated to maintain the Ephs' momentum going into the second half.

Williams came out of the half-time break ready to play. Thayer, Weinstein, and Fulton registered three goals in quick succession to make the score 12-3. Wesleyan and Williams exchanged goals, with senior Tina Nawrocki scoring her first goal of the game at 17:01. Wesleyan then went on the offensive scoring three goals in the final eight minutes of the game. Mason said “Schreiber played phenomenally. At the end they had a couple of breakaways and Schreibs made some great saves. She made 13 saves and only gave up 5 goals, which is an outrageous save percentage in lacrosse. Kate Foley also did a good job when she came in at the end.”

Mason also liked that the “number of goals and contributers were spread out,” remarking that the team “did a good job moving the ball through the midfield and played good team defense.”

The team will host Springfield College on April 20 at 4:30pm before returning to NESCAC play against Bowdoin on April 24 at 12pm.
