BRUNSWICK, ME. – Williams women's
tennis proved once more why they are the team to beat in Division
III tennis this season, crushing #11 Bowdoin this afternoon in
convincing 9-0 fashion.
“It was a really good match,” said Williams head
tennis coach Alison Swain. “We've played our
fourth team in seven days, and to finish that long haul of a week
off with a 9-0 win is just amazing. I couldn't have
asked for more.”
The Polar Bears are the eleventh top-25 opponent the Ephs have
faced in the spring season. Williams posted a remarkable 11-0
record in that stretch. With four matches remaining in the
season against unranked opponents, the Ephs seemed poised to finish
the regular season with an unblemished record against Division III
competition in 2010.
“On our team, if someone is not playing their best, they
are still competitive on the court,” continued Swain.
“We have played big points well, and I'm looking
forward to these two weeks leading up to NESCACs where we can
really relax and work on things in our game that can best prepare
us for post season play.”
After falling behind in doubles play for just the second time
this season against Middlebury on Wednesday, the Ephs picked up the
intensity and swept the opening three matches. The results
were equally impressive in singles play.
Reich was the only Eph to not win in straight sets. She
struggled to win a game in the second set, but finished off the
match with a 6-3 final set to secure the sweep. The remainder
of the Ephs singles lineup dominated their opponents.
Caroline Capute was quick to finish off her competition at court
six with a 6-1, 6-1 finish. After not playing as a regular in
last year's singles lineup, Capute has proven to be an
incredibly solid presence at court six this season.
The Ephs will travel a short distance to Colby tomorrow.
First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
