Cows Tip Bears 14-12 to Advance to the NESCAC Semifinals

BOX SCORE

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- In a stunning second half surge, Williams (10-6, 4-5 NESCAC) defeated number four Bowdoin (10-6, 6-3 NESCAC) to advance to the semifinals of the NESCAC tournament. The Eph victory was revenge for their heartbreaking regular season loss to the Polar Bears. Williams will travel to Trinity on May 8 to play in the NESCAC semifinals. Sophomore duo Katie Ellis and Margie Fulton led the Eph offense with four goals, and three goals respectively. Julia Schreiber played the entire 60 minutes, and made twelve saves.

Fulton and Ellis got the game going, scoring a goal each in the first six minutes. Bowdoin put one away a minute later, but senior Tina Nawrocki maintained the Ephs' two goal lead a minute later, scoring off a pass from Fulton. The Polar Bears scored two more goals, to tie the game before freshman Nicolle Perry, assisted by Ellis, helped the Ephs reclaim the lead. Bowdoin then went on a scoring spree, putting away five goals in the second quarter. Williams did have the final word of the half when freshman Sam Weinstein scored to make the score 8-5 in the Polar Bears' favor.

In an inversion of the first half, Bowdoin scored the first goal before Williams went on a spree of their own. The Ephs put away six goals in ten minutes. Ellis scored two goals, while Nawrocki, Weinstein, and Fulton scored one more each. Senior co-captain Whitney Thayer got on the board with 22:24 left in the half, scoring off a pass from fellow senior Nawrocki. Head Coach Chris Mason said that “We had good intensity in the first half, but we really turned it up in the second half. We handled the ball really well.” Polar Bear McKenna Teague interrupted the Eph stampede with her goal at 12:13, but Ellis responded with her fourth goal of the game. Weinstein scored two minutes later to bring the score to 13-10 in Williams' favor. Bowdoin scored two more goals, interrupted by Fulton's third, making the final score 14-12.

Mason attributed the win to a “good team effort.” She said that “everyone worked hard together. In the first game, we gave up a lot of fast breaks and free position shots, but we didn't do that this time. We played well and we're really excited about the win.”

Williams will travel to Hartford to play Trinity at 12pm on May 8.
