BOXSCORE
HARTFORD, CT––In a
come-from-behind victory, Williams (11-6, 4-5 NESCAC)
defeated top-seeded Trinity (13-3, 7-2 NESCAC) to advance to
tomorrow's NESCAC championship game. The Ephs were down 9-4
with twenty-two minutes remaining at Trinity.
Trinity got the game going scoringwise within the
first minute, before Williams seniors Whitney Thayer and Whitney
Kelly scored a pair of goals to take the lead. The Bantams scored
four back-to-back goals to reclaim the lead before freshman Sam
Weinstein briefly broke Trinity's rhythm at 15:51, but the
Bantams got right back on the board. Head Coach Chris Mason said
that they “lost too many loose balls and draws. I thought
that our our defense jumped for checks too soon, and as a result
we'd lose out body position.” Trinity scored two more
goals in the half, but sophomore Margie Fulton was able to slip one
past Bantam goalkeeper Gina Dinallo. The Ephs ended the half down
7-4.
The second half started in the same way, with the Ephs
giving up two more goals to go down 9-4. With twenty-two minutes
remaining in the game, freshman Nicolle Perry scored off of a pass
from sophomore Meera Sivilingam, sparking the beginning of a
comeback. Perry's goal finally jump-started the Eph offense,
and Williams was able to score six more uninterrupted goals.
Seniors Thayer and Alice Nelson followed closely on Perry's
heels, closing the gap to 9-7 with 19:15 left to play. Weinstein
put the eighth goal away before Sivilingam, assisted by fellow
sophomore Katie Ellis, tied the game. Mason observed that
“the seniors really led the team,” and said she was
happy that “the scoring was really spread out. A lot of
people contributed.”
The game remained tied for seven minutes until Weinstein
scored the go-ahead goal off a free-position shot. Fulton, helped
by Ellis, secured the Eph victory with a goal at 5:15.
Trinity's Sarah Remes attempted to reclaim the lead with her
3:23 goal, however, Williams won the draw and was able to kill the
remaining time to advance to tomorrow's championship
game.
Williams goalie Julia Schreiber played all sixty minutes
and made a total of fourteen saves. Mason said “Schreiber was
amazing. Our D did a good job limiting the shots in the second
half, but Schreiber was fantastic.”
Mason said “we're very excited. It was a
really great game. You don't really want to be the lower
seed, but when you're in that underdog position, you have
nothing to lose, so you just have to embrace it and go all-out. And
we did.”
Williams will take on Colby College tomorrow at
12pm.
