Box Score

HARTFORD,CT–The Williams College women's lacrosse team won its first NESCAC title by holding defending champion Colby scoreless in the second half and firing home six goals to win 9-4. The Ephs extended their scoring streak to 4-0 and have won 9 out of their past 11 games.

Colby opened the scoring, registering two goals in the first ten minutes. The Ephs and Mules exchanged goals throughout the rest of the half, with freshman Sam Weinstein and sophomore Meera Sivilingam each scoring one goal. Senior Tracey Ferriter assisted on Sivilingam's goal before she had the last word of the half, scoring one of her own with 0:51 left in the half. Williams headed into half-time down 4-3. Head Coach Chris Mason said “We went into halftime, and the team decided that one-goal was nothing. They decided they could win.”

The Williams defense was led by goalkeeper Julia Schreiber recorded 12 saves, and improved her save percentage to .531, giving her one of the best percentages in the conference. Mason said that Schreiber was “great again,” and continued saying, “this was our best game of the season so far. Everyone worked hard to win the ball back and to play tough defense.”

The story of the second half is one that is very familiar to the Ephs; they once again went on the offensive, scoring six unanswered goals to secure the victory. Seniors Whitney Kelly, Tina Nawrocki, and co-captain Whitney Thayer each scored a goal, as did junior Anne Marie Burke, and sophomores Katie Ellis and Sivilingam.  Mason observed that “We handled the ball well throughout the whole field” She specifically commended midfielders Burke and Ferriter, saying “Burkie and Tracko played great defense. They played tough, getting interceptions and staying with their players. They were also good on offense, scoring a goal each.”

Mason concluded saying “We're going to try to keep playing with the same energy and intensity. That's the key to the game.”

The win improves Williams' record to 12-6 on the year and earns the Ephs an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced later tonight between 9:00 and 10:00 PM EST on the NCAA website.
