Wesleyan tops Ephs 1-0 in season opener

MIDDLETOWN, CONN.  The Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) garnered their first win Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 victory over Williams College (0-1,0-1 NESCAC).  The win broke a seven-game winning streak for the Ephs whose first half control of the competition wasn't enough to overcome a solid second period effort by little three rivals Wesleyan University.

The first period saw back and forth competition from both teams with over nine minutes passing before the first shot on goal of the game was tallied by junior Eph Meera Sivalingam (Philadelphia, Penn.).  Junior forward Margie Fulton (Wellesley, Mass.) had a clean look at the goal 15 minutes into play but Cardinal goalie Tori Redding deflected the shot tallying one of six saves.   The Ephs had a hard-hitting half outshooting the Cardinals 8-6, but neither team found the back of the net ending the period with one penalty corner for the Ephs to Wesleyan's two and a scoreless board.

6:20 into second half play Cardinal forward Averill Roberto scored her first career goal off an assist by teammate Blair Ingraham in the circle to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead that would remain until the 70 minute mark.  The Cardinals momentum continued in the half as Wesleyan tallied a 7-2 edge in shots and a 6-1 penalty corner advantage.  Freshman Eph Emily Pavlini (Far Hills, N.J.) had a game high of three shots on goal for both teams.  Sophomore Eph defender Casey Greene (Greenwich, Conn.) finished with a solid defensive effort for the Ephs combating the Cardinal's fastbreak and Sivalingam also put together a strong performance.

Returning senior Eph goalie Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, Conn.)  and sophomore Tori Redding each spent 70 minutes in the goal acquiring 6 individual saves.  Tulla also had one goal allowed for the competition.

“From the outset it was clear this was going to be a tough first competition.  We had a great first half, but didn't play cohesively in the second.  We're looking forward to putting together a solid game on Tuesday from start to finish,” commented Coach Alix Burrale.

The Ephs will play again at home this Tuesday against Keene St. at 6PM.

The Keene St. game will be available as  webcast that can be accessed by clicking on the TEAMLINE logo on the front page of Williams Athletics or on the video link in the field hockey team schedule page.
