Williamstown, Mass.-- In their final home dual meet of the season, Williams soundly defeated visiting Springfield College this afternoon. The final score of the meet was 181-108, with Williams winning all of the swimming events, although Springfield was able to take both diving events handily.

Williams started things off right by winning the 400 yd medley relay. The team of sophomores Phillip Treesh and Paul Dyrkacz, along with junior Stuart Horgan and senior Gary Roberson, took first place with a time of 3:33.68, nearly a full 6 seconds ahead of their nearest competitors.

Sophomore Tom Vieth then led a Williams sweep in the 1000 yd freestyle, finishing in a time of 10:04.19, ahead of classmate Scott Symonds and senior David Thompson. Vieth would also win the 100 yd butterfly in a time of  53.78, just ahead of teammate Horgan, who finished in 54.72. Classmate Treesh would win the 100 yd backstroke in a time of 53.05, beating out fellow sophomore Dyrkacz, who came in second. Dyrkacz would also come in second behind Roberson in the 500 yd freestyle. Roberson finished in a time of 4:39.95, while Dyrkacz finished in 4:40.61. Sophomores John Armstrong and David Taylor came and third and fourth respectively in the 500 with times of 4:47.82 and 4:52.71.

Taylor had a particularly impressive meet, also winning the 200 yd butterfly (1:59.19) and the 200 yd IM (1:59.64). Williams first year Sean Sutherland would come in second in the butterfly, while sophomore Daeus Jorento would follow behind Taylor in the IM. Jorento also added to the team victory by placing first in the 100 yd breaststroke, ahead of classmate Christopher Corbett, and first year Christopher Greeno. Corbett would then turn around and win the 200 yd breaststroke.

Springfield enjoyed their highest level of success in the diving events, as they swept both the 1m and 3m springboard. The talented trio of Brian Sobel, Brooks Farrar and Kenny Pancoast went 1-2-3 in both events, all qualifying for the NCAA championships in the process. Williams junior Alex Long placed fourth in both events. Other individual highlights for Springfield included Josh Ernst's third place finish in the 100 yd freestyle, Nolan Manley's third in the 200 yd freestyle, and  Scott Mackstutis' third place in the 100 yd butterfly.

With the win Williams College moves to 5-3 on the year, while Springfield falls to 4-7 on the year. Williams will next travel to Middlebury to face the host Panthers on January 29th.
