Late goals push Trinity to 3-1 win

Box Score

HARTFORD, CT—For the second time this season, the Ephs fell in a close contest to the #9 Bantams. After the first period ended in a 1-1 tie, the contest remained scoreless until two Trinity goals in the last frame gave the Bantams the final 3-1 advantage.

Williams took a 1-0 lead only 5:26 into the game, when sophomore Nicolle Perry capitalized on a powerplay for the score. Perry received help from classmate Sam Weinstein in recording her 4th goal of the season

Senior Kim Weiss would even up the scoring less than 7 minutes later when she took a pass from Laura Komarek to tie the contest at 1-1. Tough defensive play by both teams would hold both sides scoreless throughout the second period.

The middle frame featured strong back and forth play by the Ephs and the Bantams, as both teams fought hard to gain the lead. Freshman Rachel Nguyen made several key saves for Williams, turning away all 12 shots that she faced.

A Williams penalty early in the third period would give the Bantams the opening they needed to claim the lead.  Senior Alexa Guglielmi put home a shot on the powerplay, with help from junior Brigitte Cellino, to give Trinity the game-winner with 11:12 left to play.

"Penalties definitely hurt us tonight," Williams coach Joey Lye remarked after the game, "We took a lot of stick penalties tonight in crucial times that took our momentum away."

The Ephs had a chance to re-tie the score when a penalty on freshman Emily Kleidon set Williams up with a powerplay with 7:21 remaining in the contest. Although the Ephs fought hard to equalize, they could not capitalize on the opportunity.

The Bantams would clinch the win with just over 4 minutes to play, despite tough defense by Williams. Komarek netted an unassisted goal of her own to give Trinity the insurance goal.

"We played well, but we didn't play consistently. When we let up and didn't play our game, they were able to capitalize," Lye said.

Nguyen was fantastic again in net for the Ephs, turning away 38 Bantam attempts, while her Trinity counterpart Alexa Pujol recorded 11 saves.

With the loss, Williams falls to 3-10 overall (2-7 NESCAC), while Trinity improves to 11-2-4 overall (4-2-3 NESCAC).

Williams concludes its road trip tomorrow against Little Three rival Wesleyan. The puck drops at 3 pm.
