New Hartford, NY—Williams kicked off play at the Hamilton Invitational today at the Yahnundasis Golf Club. Conditions were mostly sunny and hot throughout the day, and Williams took advantage of the opportunity to score well at the tricky course. The Ephs put up a team total of 299. Williams currently holds a six-stroke lead over Manhattanville College. NESCAC foe Middlebury College is in 3rd place, five back of the Manhattanville Valiants.
Individually, sophomore Cody Semmelrock '14 led the squad with a superb two-over par 73. Fellow sophomore Ross Bowen '14, who, despite some struggles with his putter, was able to put up a steady 74 to come in right behind Semmelrock. Dylan Dethier '14 turned in a solid 75, and first-year Jake Goldenring '15 shot a 77 despite a triple bogey on the 16th hole. Sophomore Jake Abrahams '14 struggled to get something going in his round, shooting an 82.
Coach Rick Pohle had the following to say about his players' efforts on Saturday: "Williams was led by Cody Semmelrock '14 who fired a solid 73 today and he got all the support he needed from Ross Bowen '14 (74), Dylan Dethier '14 (75) and Jake Goldenring '15 (77). Jake Abrahams '14 struggled with the putter on a couple of greens and came in with an 82, but still managed a good number of well played holes to feel good about tomorrow's round."
Pohle also offered perspective on the team's overall performance: "We played very solid today and may have left a few strokes out there, but that happens in this game. I thought we handled some adversity quite well and still came away with a very good team effort."
The tournament will move to Skenendoa C.C. tomorrow, with the shotgun start beginning at 10:30 A.M.
