Late goal propels Polar Bears to 4-3 win

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, ME—In a hard-fought game that went down to the wire, Bowdoin managed to best the visiting Ephs tonight, 4-3. Kayte Holtz notched the game-winner for the Polar Bears with 1:32 remaining to give Bowdoin the victory.

Junior Eliza Foster put the Ephs on the board first, tallying her 2nd goal of the year just 3:53 into the game. Freshman Ally Ensor ripped a shot on net, which Bowdoin keeper Tara Connolly initially turned away, but Foster was able to send home the rebound to give the Ephs the 1-0 lead.

Bowdoin was able to take advantage of 2 Eph penalties later in the period however, and after 20 minutes the score was 2-1 in the Polar Bears' favor. Junior Kendra Sweet notched the equalizer, her first goal of the evening with 9:12 to play in the opening frame. Bowdoin would capitalize on another powerplay with only 16 seconds remaining in the first period. Holtz centered a pass to Sweet, who put home the go-ahead goal with a one-timer.

The Polar Bears would hold their one-goal lead until after 15 minutes had passed in the 2nd period. Williams sophomore Sam Weinstein tied up the score on a nice shorthanded goal with 4:43 remaining in the middle frame, beating Connolly gloveside to even up the game at 2-2.

Dominique Lozzi helped Bowdoin regain their one-goal advantage about halfway through the final period. Off a rebound from teammate Alexandra Fahey's shot, Lozzi picked up the loose puck and found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

The Ephs would not let the game slip away and retaliated less than four minutes later. Junior Sarah Herr netted her first goal of the season at an opportune time for Williams, evening up the game at 3. Herr picked up a loose puck in front of the net, beating Connolly for the score with 8 minutes to play.

Bowdoin regained the lead for good with 1:32 remaining. The Ephs had the opportunity to take advantage of two Polar Bear penalties, but the home team successfully killed both. Holtz skated the puck the length of the ice, avoiding a few Williams defenders, then beat Eph freshman keeper Rachel Nguyen with a high gloveside shot for Bowdoin's fourth goal of the night.

"We forechecked very well tonight," Williams coach Joey Lye remarked, "Overall, we had a great team effort. Becca Nichols and Cristina Bravi had great second efforts tonight, Kristen Tubbs used her speed very well, and Eliza Foster had a great game tonight."

Both netminders had stellar nights between the pipes. Lye noted that Nguyen had a great 2nd half, finishing with 29 saves, while Bowdoin's Connolly denied the Ephs 21 times.

The Ephs now stand at 4-15-1 overall (3-11-1 NESCAC) and conclude their regular season tomorrow against Colby. Depending on the outcome, Williams will either clinch the 7th or the 8th seed in the NESCAC playoffs. The Ephs take on the Mules at 3 pm in Alfond Rink.
