Men's Squash Falls to Penn at Nationals

CAMBRIDGE— The Williams Men's squash team lost a tightly contested 6-3 match to Penn in the "B" draw semi-finals. The loss sends Williams into a 3/4 match against Brown tomorrow for the rights to a final ranking of 11th nationally.

After a close 5-4 loss in January, the men knew going in they had a chance to upset the 10th ranked Quakers. The Ephs dropped two of the first three matches, but Jack Ervasti was able to pull out an impressive five game win at the number six position, making the score 2-1 at the end of the first round. The second round saw a victorious co-captain Will Gruner, but first years Taylor Foehl and Andy Maruca lost in five and four games, respectively at the five and eight spots.

Trailing 4-2 entering the last round of matches, the Ephs turned in three gutsy performances, though in the end they would come up just short. Will Morris played well and lost in four at the top spot. Nick Marks lost a tightly contested five game match at the four position. Alec Greaves-Tunnell had the match of the day for the Ephs at the seven spot. Greaves-Tunnell climbed out of a 2-0 hole, battling off four match balls in the fourth game and one in the fifth to eventually take the fifth and final game 13-11.

"I love the way our team competed today, we really gave Penn all they could handle. Alec, Jack, and Will had phenomenal wins and we were very close with a number of other matches. We have to turn things around and focus on Brown now" said coach Zafi Levy.

The Ephs will face Brown in their final match of the season tomorrow at 3:00 at Harvard. Williams beat Brown earlier in February 8-1 at home.
