LEWISTON, Me. — Junior Margie Fulton scored six goals and added an assists Saturday and her Williams College women's lacrosse team scored four goals in the first 77 seconds of the game en route to an 18-12 Williams victory over Bates in NESCAC action.
Williams, ranked No. 10 in the country, improved to 2-1 on the season, 1-1 in conference play. The Ephs travel to Virginia Tuesday to play at Mary Washington in a 4 p.m. contest.
Eph sophomore Sam Weinstein recorded three goals and three assists in the win. Emily Whicker added three goals, in addition to a game-high eight draw controls, while Stephanie Gallo and Katie Pettengill added two scores apiece.
Goalie Julia Schreiber played immensely in goal for Williams, making 18 saves to offset the host Bobcats' 37-32 advantage in shots.
"We had a great start," Ephs' head coach Chris Mason said. "We did a really good job on center draws, winning the ball, going to the goal and creating opportunities for ourselves. We were pretty poised on offense and I thought we worked hard in the midfield."
The Ephs won the game-opening draw and scored just 22 seconds in, with Weinstein assisting Gallo, then got another score just nine seconds later, as Weinstein won the draw and fed Fulton on a quick break. Williams won its third straight draw and Fulton converted an unassisted goal, and Williams had a 3-0 lead 57 seconds into the game. Twenty seconds later, Weinstein converted the free-position shot she was awarded, making it 4-0 wiht 28:43 left in the half.
Bates finally gained possession for the first time as first-year Wally Pierce won the draw control. Gross's shot was saved by Schreiber, and the Ephs charged upfield for a clear and a second goal by Gallo, assisted by Fulton, for a 5-0 lead with 27:36 to go.
Williams didn't let up from there, but Bates didn't give up either. Williams extended its lead to 9-3 by the halfway point of the first half, but back-to-back goals by Brallier closed it to 9-5. Emily Jablonski padded Williams' lead to 10-5 with an unassisted tally, and Whicker made it 11-5 with another.O'Neill fed Brallier for a score with 56 seconds to go, but Williams got the last score of the half as Kaitlin Ellis got her second assist of the game, feeding Fulton for her fifth goal of the period, giving the Ephs a 12-6 halftime lead.
Williams outscored Bates 4-2 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, frustrating the Bobcats' comeback attempts. Bates reeled off three straight, however, with all three goals involving Gross, to cut the gap to 16-11. Gross converted a Dannis assisst, then tallied her fourth and fifth assists of the season on goals by Maggie Reilly and Bridget Meedzan at the 15:30 and 14:11 marks, respectively.
Brallier won the ensuing draw control, leading to a shot by O'Neill that was blocked by an Eph defender. The teams traded shots on goal before Weinstein buried a free-position shot with 10:15 to go, bumping Williams' lead back to six goals at 17-11.
Dannis scored an unassisted goal with an off-speed shot that snuck past Schreiber with 9:04 to go, but the Ephs made up for it with an unassisted goal by Whicker, finishing the scoring with 7:45 left in the game.
