Ephs pick up two more wins on second day of trip

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Williams College softball team stayed unbeaten by picking up two very different wins Tuesday - one a walk-off win over Southern Maine and one that was never in doubt over D'Youville.

The Ephs (4-0) are off Wednesday and will face Trinity (Conn.) and Eastern Connecticut Thursday back at the National Training Center.

Tuesday's first game against Southern Maine was a back and forth affair, with the Ephs taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Caitlyn Cain doubled and Mary Beth Daub tripled her home. Southern Maine scored three times in the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Ephs got one back in the fourth when Cedar Blazek smacked her first home run of the season.

A little two out magic in the bottom of the sixth gave Williams a 4-3 lead. Amanda Correnti singled to center and pinch-runner Alyssa Quan stole second. First year Ali Graebner ripped a double that tied the game and classmate Theresa Legan singled her home for the lead.

An error, wild pitch and sac fly in the top of the seventh gave Southern Maine the lead back, but the Ephs rallied again in their half of the seventh. With one out, Cain walked, but was erased at second on a Daub fielder's choice. Blazek kept the game going with a single up the middle. A wild pitch put Daub on third and Blazek on second and a walk to Merrilee Weston loaded the bases. Correnti then smacked a grounder to second that was misplayed, allowing both Daub and Blazek to score and the Ephs to win.

Sophomore Megan Casey earned the victory from the circle, allowing six hits and four walks over seven innings while striking out eight. Only three of the five runs she allowed were earned. Blazek was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Cain was 1 for 2 with two walks.

In the nightcap against D'Youville, a big six-run fourth inning have starter Daub all the runs she would need. Daub went the the first five frames, allowing three hits and one run, unearned, while walking one and striking out six.Kaitlin Dinet hurled the final two innings, allowing one hit while walking no one and striking out three.

Williams took a 1-0 lead in the second when Blazek led off the inning with her second home ruin of the day, and season. The big six-run fourth inning began the same way, with Blazek rocketing a solo homer.

Following that, Weston walked and one out later, stole second. Dinet smoked an RBI-double and Blair Curzi followed with a single. Legan then singled to left for an RBI. Allison Hart's bunt single loaded the bases. Cain's grounder to second scored another run and Daub's double to left made it 7-0 Williams.

Blazek and Hart were both 2 for 4, and Weston finished the game 2 for 2.
