CLERMONT, Fla. — The Williams College softball team ran its season-opening win streak to seven games Friday before falling to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the nightcap of a doubleheader to end the day with a 7-1 record.
Williams will face Cornell College (9:30 a.m.) and SUNY-New Paltz (11:30 a.m.) Saturday.
In Friday's first game, The Ephs rallied from an early 3-2 deficit to defeat Buffalo State, 5-3. The Ephs took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kaitlin Dinet led off with a triple down the right-field line. After an out, first year Ali Graebner ripped a triple into the right-center field gap to score Dinet and tie the game. Dinet picked up the win from the circle, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five hits while walking two and striking out one. Megan Casey came on with runners on second and third and one out in the top of the seventh, walked the first batter she faced to load the bases and then fanned the next two hitters to earn a save.
Dinet was 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored for the Ephs.
The Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap against Wisconsin-Stevens Point as Dinet grounded an RBI-single in the top of the first. The Pointers responded with nine unanswered runs, ending the game with a single tally in the bottom of the sixth (putting the eight-run mercy rule in effect).
First year Alyssa Quann got the start for Williams and took the loss, going four full frames and allowing eight hits and four walks while striking out two.
