Ephs use the long ball to gain split with Springfield

Game 1 Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The Williams College softball team used the long ball to rally from 4-0 and 9-4 deficits in the first game of a doubleheader with Springfield Monday, pulling out a 12-10 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.

Mother Nature helped the Pride exact revenge on the Ephs in the nightcap as Springfield took a 7-1 decision in five innings in a game called due to darkness.

Williams is 9-9 after the split. The Ephs open at home Wednesday with a doubleheader against Keene State that begins at 3:30 p.m.

"It was good to see the bats come alive in the first game," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "And there is something to be said about a team rallying from 4-0 and 9-4 deficits, that was exciting. We still need to field the ball better, and to pitch the ball better."

Trailing 4-0 after two in the first game, the Ephs rallied in the top of the third when Amanda Correnti and Carly Ameen connected for back-to-back jacks that made it 4-2. It was 5-2 entering the top of the fourth when Mary Beth Daub lined a one-out single and, with two outs, Kaitlin Dinet crushed a two-run homer to left-center field that made it a one-run game.

Down 9-4 entering the top of the fifth, the Ephs struck for eight runs on seven hits to build a 12-9 lead. First-year Theresa Legan ignited the big inning with a lead-off home run to straightaway center field. An RBI-single from Aly Ensor and a two-run single down the left-field line from Merrilee Weston made it 9-8.

Dinet's double to right center tied the score and Correnti's groundout to first gave the Ephs a 10-9 lead. A wild pitch and an RBI-single from Caitlyn Cain added to the run total.

Daun picked up the win from the circle, going seven innings and giving up 13 hits and 10 runs, nine earned, while walking six and striking out two.

Dinet was 2 for 4 with three RBI for the Ephs. Cain was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Ameen was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Williams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a run in the first. Dinet hot a towering home run to right field to account for the run. Springfield bounced back with two runs in its hald of the first and never looked back, scoring two more in the second and third to build a 6-1 lead.

Jennifer Joseph earned the win for Springfield, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out one over her five innings of work. Megan Casey took the loss for the Ephs, allowing eight hits and four walks while striking out two over five frames.

Dinet, Ensor and Blair Curzi had hits for the Ephs. Kelsey Dunn was 2 for 2 with two RBI for the Pride, which improved to 19-12 overall with the victory.
