SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY––Williams (7-5, 2-4 NESCAC) defeated Skidmore (7-4) 11-8 in today's non-conference game.
Kaitlin Ellis'12 and Rebecca McGovern'14 led the scoring for Williams, scoring three goals each. Ellis also added an assist. Head Coach Chris Mason said "We had a pretty good first half. We still mishandle the ball when we're trying to get out of our defensive end. We're really not getting good ball handling through the midfield. We'do well defensively and then turn it over. It really hurts us."
The Ephs, who are currently ranked 18 by the NCAA, jumped out to an early lead, going up 5-1 in the first fifteen minutes of the game. McGovern scored the first goal of the game just four minutes in. Skidmore put one away before the Ephs notched four in a row, including two goals and an assist from Ellis. Skidmore slipped a goal in at 10:04, but Williams' offense, scoring four more to end the half up 9-2.
McGovern scored early in the second half, making the score 10-2. The Thoroughbreds took control soon after McGovern's goal, scoring five goals in a row, bringing the score within three with just under eight minutes left to play. A strong Eph defense held the score at 10-7 for the next six minutes before McGovern scored with 1:55 left in the game. Skidmore scored the final goal of the game with 0:42 seconds left. The final score was 11-8.
Mason said that the team will "focus on patience on offense and more discipline defensively so we don't give up as many fouls" this week during practice in preparation for Saturday's Little Three game against Wesleyan.
Williams returns to NESCAC play against Wesleyan on Saturday, April 16th.
