Ephs earn first NESCAC win with 11-4 decision over Wesleyan

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, CT -- The Williams College softball team pounded out 12 hits, including a grand slam from first year Ali Graebner to cap a five-run 7th inning, to back the seven-hit pitching of senior Mary Beth Daub in securing its initial conference win of the year, 11-4, over Wesleyan University here today.

It was the first game of the teams' three-game league series which concludes tomorrow in a double-header in Middletown. The first game begins at 12 p.m. Williams improved to 10-9, 1-3 with the victory.

The Ephs took the lead for good in the third inning when sophomore Cedar Blazek smacked a two-run double into the gap in right-center field to chase home freshman Theresa Legan, who walked with two outs, and sophomore Kaitlin Dinet, who singled.  Both advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on Blazek's hit.  Blazek then scored the fourth run of the game for the Ephs on freshman Ally Ensor's single.

Williams carried a 6-2 lead into the 7th inning as Dinet scored on a wild pitch in the 5th and senior Carly Ameen lined her first home run of the year over the center field fence in the 6th.  After Williams made it 7-2 on Ensor's RBI single with one out in the 7th, the Ephs loaded the bases with two outs before Graebner unloaded them with a blast to left-center, her first home run of her collegiate career.

Williams' first run of the game came in the 2nd when Ensor, who led the Ephs with three hits, singled and eventually scored on an infield groudout.

Wesleyan manufactured a run in the 1st to take the early lead as sophomore Allee Beatty walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fly ball to right field by junior Chrissy Bello.  Wesleyan also got an unearned run in the 5th when freshman Amy Lindland bunted for a base hit and the late throw to first base eluded everyone, rolling all the way to the right-field corner, allowing Lindland to circle the bases.

Daub allowed just one earned run and four hits heading into the 7th as she was in control most of the way.  Wesleyan starter freshman Laura Getchell, coming off shutout wins over NESCAC West front-runners Middlebury (6-1) and Amherst (5-1) in her last two starts, was touched for 11 hits and nine earned runs before departing in the 7th inning with one out.
