WILLIAMSTOWN—The 2nd ranked Williams Women's Tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to #1 Amherst on Sunday. The win gives Amherst the 2011 Little Three crown.
Williams found itself in a 3-0 hole after doubles play, but fought back admirably in the singles session. Kristin Alotta turned in a dominating 6-1, 6-0 performance against Jordan Brewer, who was previously unbeaten in DIII play. "Kristin played really relaxed and confident today. I thought she did a really nice job of controlling the points, which in the end was what got her the win," commented head coach Alison Swain after the match.
Kathleen Elkins also had an impressive win for the Ephs, taking her match 6-3, 6-0. "Kathleen played smart, focused, and overall great tennis today," said Swain.
Williams now enters a tough stretch of matches , as they take on Middlebury Wednesday and Tufts Saturday. "We've got some big matches coming up. We have to do a better job in doubles play, but we have been doing a nice job in singles," said Swain.
The match marks the second time Williams has lost to Amherst this season, previously dropping a 5-4 decision at Amherst. The Ephs are likely to see Amherst again, either during NESCAC tournament play or in the NCAA tournament. When asked about a potential rematch Swain commented, "we'd look forward to playing them again. I think the team is ready to work hard and improve."
