Box Score

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Geena Constantin and Elizabeth Morris combined for a 3-hit shutout Friday as the Middlebury College Panthers spoiled the NESCAC West opener for the Williams College softball team with a 5-0 win.

Williams fell to 8-6 overall, 0-1 in NESCAC West play with the loss. The Ephs and Panthers will plat twice Saturday, with the first game beginning at 12 p.m. Middlebury sits at 11-4 overall, 3-1 in the division after Friday.

"We made some crucial physical mistakes and a couple of mental ones as well," Ephs' coach Kris Herman said. "We didn't hit well, we didn't pitch well and we didn't field well. We just did not get it done today."

Constantin no-hit the Ephs for the first four innings Friday. Her teammates gave her a 2-0 with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single from Alyson Downing and a fielding error by Williams.

The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the fourth on Leslie Crawford's RBI-single.

Williams broke through the hit column in the top of the fifth when senior Mary Beth Daub roped a one-out double on a rocket to center that one-hopped the fence. With two outs, Kaitlin Dinet drew a walk, but Constantin induced pinch-hitter Blaiz Curzi to ground out to third to end the threat.

Middlebury added single runs in its fifth and sixth innings to build a 5-0 lead.

Williams had hits in both its sixth and seventh innings but could not score. In the sixth, senior Carly Ameen led off with a single off of Constantin, which prompted the move that brough Middlebury reliever Morris into the contest. Moss retired the first three Ephs she faced, ending the inning.

In the seventh Morris retired the first two Ephs she faced before Merrillee Weston singled. Dinet was then hit with a pitch, but Morris retired Amanda Correnti on a gounder to second base to end the game.

Crawford finished 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Panthers, while Downing was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Constantin earned the win, allowing two hits and two walks while fanning four over five innings.

Ameen was 1 for 2 for Williams, Daub and Weston 1 for 3. Megan Casey took the loss, going six innings and giving up nine hits and four walks while striking out four. She was charged with three earned runs.
