Trinity eliminates Ephs from NESCAC Tournament, 7-5

MEDFORD, MA — Abigail Ostrom went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI Saturday morning to spearhead a 13-hit attack for Trinity as the Bantams held off Williams, 7-5, in the first elimination game of the 2011 NESCAC Tournament being played at Tufts University's Spicer Field.

The Ephs' season concludes with a 20-18-1 record. Trinity advances to a 2 p.m. elimination game.

Trinity built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings Saturday morning, reaching Eph starter Megan Casey for a run in the first and two in the second. Ostrom had a double in the first that moved Katie Stoltenberg to third. Stoltenberg scored on a wild pitch from Casey.

In the Trinity second, Amelia Mostovoy led off with a solo home run off Casey. Stoltenberg later had an RBI-double.

Williams came roaring back to tie the game with a three-run top of the fourth inning. First year Ally Ensor got things started with a solo home, her fifth of the season. Cedar Blazek singled and Merrilee Weston drew a walk from Trinity starter Katherine Poulos. Amanda Correnti then ripped a single down the left-field line that scored pinch-runner Alyssa Quan to make it 3-2 Trinity. Mary Beth Daub's one-out RBI-single to right tied things up, but Poulos wiggled out of further damage.

Trinity answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Following an error, walk and sac bunt from Stoltenberg, Ostrom lined a two-riun single to left for a 5-3 Trinity advantage. The Bantams added two more in the fifth for a 7-3 lead.

The Ephs' rallied briefly in the top of the seventh as two errors wrapped around an RBI-double from Ensor made it 7-5. But Poulos fanned Weston — who represented the tying run — to end things for Williams.

Ensor was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Ephs. Correnti was 2 for 3 and Blazek 2 for 4. Daub took the loss, giving up 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings while being charged with four runs, three earned. She did not walk a batter and struck out one.
