MAINE – The women's team traveled to Maine this weekend for their first matches of the new year. First, they took on the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Saturday at 2 pm. The Bowdoin team has improved drastically since last season, and has four new freshman filling in the top four spots. That aside, the Ephs played strong matches throughout the lineup, taking an 8-1 win.
The women then traveled to Colby for a late match at 7 pm. Even though the Ephs sat two of their players, they still took an impressive 9-0 victory. Junior, Alli Rubin, played especially well, pulling out a four game win.
Finally, the women traveled to Lewiston to take on Bates, their most anticipated match on the weekend. Knowing that the Bates team got a lot of new players, adding to their already strong lineup, the Ephs knew it was going to be a tough match. Number three, Ellie O'Neill, played a tough three games, but eventually succumbed to her opponent. Senior co-captain, Carolyn Kaemmer, secured Williams first win of the day with a five game battle at the number six position. Alyssa Northrop followed suit by taking the Ephs second win of the day. Senior co-captain, Courtney Bogle, also had a impressive showing, taking the first game off of her highly ranked opponent before dropping the next three games. Junior, Alli Rubin, also had a strong showing against a very strong international recruit. Caroline Sawin, Eliana Saltzman, and Gibbs Cullen all lost in a close four games at the seven, eight, and nine positions, and junior, Laura Henry, lost in three tough games at the number four position.
Overall, the women are happy with their performances this weekend, and look forward to another hard week of training before traveling to New Haven for the Yale Round Robin.
