After the match Bates forfeited following a ruling by the College Squash Association.
The forfeit resulted in a 7-2 win for Williams.
HARTFORD – The women's squash team traveled to Trinity College today for their start to NESCACS. They took on Amherst first at 1:30 in the quarterfinals, followed by Bates at 7:30 in the semifinals.
Having played Amherst the week before at Little Threes, the Ephs were ready to secure another 9-0 victory. With their number one, Courtney Bogle, seated for the match, the Ephs still managed to pull out another decisive win, with only two games dropped throughout the lineup. Pleased with their 9-0 finish, the Ephs moved on to the semifinals where they took on Bates for the second time this season.
Determined to perform better than their 7-2 loss against the Bobcats earlier in the season, the Ephs got on court ready to fight. Having trained extremely hard over the past few weeks, they were confident in their abilities, and knew they could push Bates to their limit. Everyone played impressive squash, which provided for an exciting atmosphere and a tight 5-4 finish.
Ellie O'Neill gave the Ephs their first win, while Alyssa Northrop and Carolyn Kaemmer followed with nail biting five gamers. Laura Henry provided the fourth and final win for the Ephs with a strong four gamer. Although falling just short in the fifth, Courtney Bogle showed great fitness and control as she pushed her opponent to the limit. Finally, despite their great level of play, Mia Fry, Caroline Sawin, and Hannah Kaemmer were unable to secure wins.
Junior Alli Rubin stated about the Bates match, "We took a big step forward today. Everyone left all they had on the court, and we hope to get another chance to play them at nationals."
Although the women were disappointed by their near win, they knew they preformed well, sending a strong message to the squash community. They take on Middlebury tomorrow at 12pm for the 3/4 position at NESCACS.
