Women's lacrosse out shoots MIT 18-4

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Williams women's lacrosse rebounded from a season-opening loss to Wesleyan on Saturday to overcome MIT 18-4 tonight on the road. Williams improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Engineers fell to 0-2.

"We came out fired up and executed well throughout the game," Eph tri-captain Margie Fulton said. "We know we are a much better team than Saturday's performance indicated, so it was great for us to have the opportunity to improve on some parts of our game so soon soon after this weekend."

11 Ephs scored in the game, and six of the goals were assisted. Sam Weinstein led the way with two goals and two assists, while Steph Gallo had two goals and an assist and Emily Jablonski netted a goal and chipped in two assists of her own.

Erica Du led the way for the Engineers with two goals.

Williams took control of the game from the outset, scoring only 49 seconds in when tri-captain Meera Sivalingam found Fulton in front of the net. Fulton easily scored after the catch to give the Ephs a 1-0 lead.

Fulton's goal sparked an impressive run from the women, who ripped off a four more goals before the 20 minute mark and kept MIT off the scoreboard until the score was 8-0 with 7:29 to play in the half. At that point, the Engineers finally managed to get on the scoreboard – but the goal did little to change the course of the game, as the Ephs scored four more before the break to the Engineers' one. The teams entered half time with the score 12-2 in favor of Williams.

The Ephs did not score at the same pace in the second half, but nevertheless controlled the play, outscoring the Engineers 6-2 in the half. The final goal of the game was scored by Maggie MacCallum on a free position shot; it was MacCallum's first goal of the season and the second goal of her career.

Fulton finished the game with two goals, as did Taylor Fleishheiker, Emily Whicker, and Alex Sera. The Ephs totaled 30 shots on the game.

"It was great to get a win coming off the tough loss to Wesleyan on Saturday," Williams head coach Chris Mason said. "We played hard, came out with intensity, and played as a team. We did a great job moving the ball, and we were able to get everybody in the game, and we were able to work on some plays and try some new things, which was really great."

Williams will now look to build on the momentum from tonight's win when it faces Trinity in a NESCAC contest at home on Saturday at 12 p.m.

"We need to keep our focus on ball movement, not turning the ball over, and controlling the tempo," Mason said. "On the offensive end, we need to make sure to create opportunities and take them when we do. And on the defensive end, we need to make sure we are in good position, able to double team and help one another."
