WILLIAMSTOWN – Women's squash finishes the weekend 3-0 after victories over Bates and Mount Holyoke on Sunday afternoon. The Ephs defeated NESCAC rival Bates 6-3 and then Mount Holyoke 8-1.
The day began at noon with the long anticipated match versus Bates. The Ephs jumped on the Bobcats from the start, beginning with Caroline Sawin (#6) topping her opponent in three games. Next off the court with a victory for Williams came Ellie O'Neill (#3). After trailing 6-10 in the first game, O'Neill came up with an impressive comeback, winning the first game 12-10. O'Neill continued that momentum to defeat her opponent 3-0 as well.
The other four wins of the day came from Mia Fry (#8), Nicole Feshbach (#5), Alyssa Northrop (#4), and co-captain Laura Henry (#1). Fry and Feshbach ended their matches in three games and then Northrop clinched the victory for the Ephs with a 3-1 win over her opponent.
Hannah Kaemmer (#8) and co-captain Alli Rubin (#2) both fought hard in their matches, but were eventually defeated in five games. Lily Grant (#9) lost to her opponent in four close games.
Head coach Zafi Levy was happy with the morning win. "Excellent win against a strong Bates team," commented Levy. "I could not be happier with the team's performance today. We are getting better each day, and look forward to some tough matches next weekend.
However, the day was not over for the women, who then turned their attention to Mount Holyoke. Numbers four through nine had little trouble with their opponents, all ending in 3-0 victories for the Ephs. Gibbs Cullen (#9) and Hailey Newbound (#8) had their first victories in the top nine for Williams of the season.
The top three matches proved more challenging, all concluding in five games. Northrop (#3) and Rubin (#2) were able to come out victorious for the Ephs, coming through in the fifth games of their respective matches. Henry was able to fight off match ball in the fourth game to win 13-11, but was ultimately overpowered by her opponent 11-9 in the fifth game.
Rubin felt good about the Ephs performance for the day. "Today was a great day for our team," said Rubin. "Everyone showed up to play and left everything on the court. Bates is always a tough match for us, and this win showed everyone how capable we are."
The women return to the court on Friday, January 18th in New Haven with a match versus St. Lawrence. The Ephs will also play George Washington and Franklin & Marshall in the upcoming weekend.
