New London, CT -- The Williams College men's ice hockey team (11-4-2/9-2-1 NESCAC) posted a 5-0 win over Connecticut College (5-10-3/1-8-3 NESCAC) on the road at Dayton Arena. Williams got two goals each from John Wickman and Eric Rubio and a 30-save performance from goalie Sean Dougherty in solidifying their hold on second place in NESCAC.
Today's game was the second game of a three-game road stretch covering a span of just four days. Coming off of a clutch 5-3 road win at Tufts last night, the Ephs were looking to extend their winning streak to three games.
Williams capitalized very early in the game netting the only goal they would need on the day at 1:10 of the first period. The Eph goal came off a wrist shot from the slot from John Wickman. Freshman forward Zander Masucci was credited with an assist on the goal.
The Wickman tally was the lone goal registered in the first 20-minute stanza and the Ephs, though out shot 13-12 took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second period was evenly played up until 16 minutes had elapsed. At 16:14 Eric Rubino doubled the Eph lead when he converted off a shot by Nick Anderson. Rubino finished on a redirect in front of the net by tipping the shot from Anderson past the Camels' goalie.
Only sixteen seconds later, John Wickman buried his second goal of the contest on a rebound tally with assists going to Paul Steinig and Rubino. With goalie Sean Dougherty turning aside 13 more shots from the Connecticut College Camels the Ephs owned a 3-0 lead after two periods.
At 5:39 of the final frame, Mike Broft scored the fourth Eph goal with assists being awarded to defensemen Greg Johnson and Evan Dugdale. Rubino then notched the final goal of the afternoon at 10:10 on a power play opportunity. Nick Anderson and Greg Johnson assisted.
The Ephs tightened up on defense in the third period holding the Camels to just four shots. "Overall it was a complete game; it was a full 60- minute effort by our team, which was one of our goals," said Eph head coach Bill Kangas. "We got our second consecutive win on the road, which was another one of our goals for the weekend."
The Ephs, looking to extend their win streak to four, will be back on the ice again on Monday night when they travel to Boston to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology. The puck will drop at 6:45 p.m.
