Women's Squash Defeats Columbia 7-2

WILLIAMSTOWN – Women's squash ends the weekend in style – beating Columbia 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. Today's match was the Ephs last one at home for the season, and they made sure it was going to be a victory for Williams right from the start.

Ellie O'Neill (#3) was the first off the court with a win for the women. After losing the first game, then winning the second, O'Neill only gave up six points in the final two games to take the match home. Caroline Sawin (#6) came off the court a few minutes later, beating her opponent in four games as well. Senior Mia Fry (#9) made sure her last match at Williams ended in her favor. After finding herself down 2-1, Fry came through in the clutch and won in a close five gamer.

After the first round of matches the Ephs were up 3-0, and the second round came in and finished the job. Lily Grant (#8) had a close match, but made sure her opponent did not get the chance to win, finishing her off 12-10 in the fourth game. Nicole Feshbach (#5) was also victorious, defeating her Columbia counterpart 3-0. Senior co-captain Laura Henry played in one of the highlight matches of the day. With the match score tied at 1-1, Henry battled hard to take the fourth game 15-13. That game proved to be the turning point of the match, with Henry then taking the fourth game 11-6, to ensure her last match at Williams also ended in a victory.

With only three matches to go, the Ephs were up 6-0 on the Lions. While both Hannah Kaemmer (#7) and Alyssa Northrop (#4) fought hard, they were eventually defeated each in three close games. Senior co-captain Alli Rubin (#1) was the last off the court for the Ephs, in another highlight match of the day. The match started off with Rubin finding herself down 9-3, but Rubin charged ahead, making a great comeback, and took the first game 13-11. The next game was just as close, but with her opponent getting the edge 11-9. With the match tied, Rubin was determined that she would also have her last match at home end in a win – then proceeded to finish off her opponent in four games.

The Ephs finished the weekend with a final record of 3-1.

"This was a perfect ending to the weekend," commented Rubin. "All of the seniors fought hard and showed how far they've come in the past four years. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going in the next few weeks as we head into NESCACS and nationals."

Head coach Zafi Levy agreed with his captain. "Fantastic weekend for our women's team," added Levy. "Winning our 14th Little Three Title in a row is quite an achievement. Although we came just short of beating Brown, the performance against Columbia was fantastic. We look forward to another week of training before heading to NESCAC's next weekend."

Women's squash will travel to Trinity College next weekend to compete in the NESCAC Championships. Williams will come in as the number two seed, defeating all their NESCAC foes besides the nationally ranked number five team, Trinity.
