Ephs Open Wrestling Season With Win Over Trinity

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Saturday the Ephs took on the Trinity College Bantams at home and handily secured a victory.

With a 37-15 win, the Williams wrestling team started their 2013-2014 season positively. Head coach Scott Honecker was pleased with the match and plans on keeping up the momentum throughout the winter. "I thought everyone's effort was 100% where we needed it," Honecker commented after the match, "although we came out with the victory, I would say the most valuable thing we take away from today was identifying areas of improvement, which was important this early in the season."

Dan Evangelakos [133] started the day's matches off with a 10-2 victory over his opponent and was followed by an impressive 2:43 pin from senior Carson Brooks [141].

In the 157 and 165 weight classes, Jorge Lopez and Kyle Gaffney defeated their opponents, Lopez with a high-flying 6:19 pin.

Anthony Brooks pinned the Trinity wrestler in the 197 weight class in 1:44.

Freshmen Martin Strenk [174], Kevin Hernandez [184], and Charles (CJ) Levin [285] fell to their first collegiate opponents in the latter moments of their matches. 

"We were relatively dominant in the early weights and the match was well in hand before Trinity won their first match on the mat, so the guys were loose," stated Honecker. "They wrestled tough and I was really proud of everyone from the top to the bottom."

The Eph head coach is optimistic about the season, adding, "we really were able to identify some areas where we could improve, if we were able to improve in those areas, we're going be as good as Williams wrestling has ever been."

Next week the Ephs travel to The Doug Parker Invitational, a 20-team tournament hosted by Springfield College.

Honecker remarked that the tournament was an "individual event so every guy on the roster will be in the line-up participating and the goal is to push as many guys as far as possible in the tournament as we can."
