New London, CT -- Three goals in the third period proved to be enough for the Ephs to capture their second win the season, first on the road, 5-2over Connecticut College.
With the win Williams improved to 2-0-1, 2-0-1 NESCAC, while Connecticut College fell to 0-3-0, 0-3-0 NESCAC,
The third period was hard fought and remained scoreless for the first half of the period. It was not until freshman defenseman, James McNamara , scored as a result of a good fore check and great puck movement. After the Ephs seized possession of the puck in the offensive zone, a shot was fired on net. McNamara pinched in from his usual spot just inside the blue line and put away a rebound with a quick wrist shot. The McNamara gol upped the Eph lead to 3-1.
Later in the period on the power play the Ephs had a chance to extend their lead. Frankie Mork scored his first collegiate goal putting the Ephs up 4-1 on a nice shot from the slot with just under three minutes remaining in the contest. Craig Kitto was awarded the lone assist on the play.
The Ephs were not quite done with their late scoring attack. On the next shift, Frankie Mork fired a shot on net where it was deflected and freshman George Hunkele was there to put in the rebound. This late goal put the Ephs up 5-1 with only two minutes remaining.
The Camels were able to narrow their defecit to 5-2 on a penalty shot goal by sophomore, Tim DiPretoro, with only 14 seconds left.
The beginning moments of the game consisted of even play from both teams until Williams forward, Matt Doyle, was able put away the first goal of the game at the 5:56 mark with assists going to freshmen duo George Hunkele and Sam Gray. Hunkele found Gray on a cross ice pass; after receiving the pass, Gray hit Doyle out in front of the net where Doyle had his stick ready for a five-hole finish on Connecticut College goalie, Mike Petchonka '14 (17 saves on 22 shots).
The Camels tied the game up with a power play goal not even four minutes later when forward ,JC Cangelosi '15, beat Eph goaltender, Sean Dougherty (29 saves on 31 shots). Assists were awarded to Mike Doyle '15 and Greg Liautaud.
The excitement of the game continued when the Ephs scored a power play goal of their own just under three minutes later. Craig Kitto '15 kept his three-game point streak alive with a sweet diagonal cross-ice pass that found senior captain, Paul Steinig on the right side of the net. Steinig ripped a shot that beat Petchonka short side top corner to put the Ephs up by one.
After one period of the hockey, the scoreboard read, Williams 2, Connecticut College 1.
The second period was controlled by the Camels, outshooting the Ephs 11-5. Strong play from Williams goaltender, Sean Dougherty, was key in keeping the game at a reasonable score. Williams head coach, Bill Kangas, was thrilled with his goaltender's performance between the pipes, "The second period was controlled by Connecticut College but Sean made some key saves during the course of the period that kept the game in reach. Sean made good saves all night that kept us in a position to win."
The second period remained scoreless the entire period, however, Connecticut College clearly had momentum heading into the locker room.
Williams head coach, Bill Kangas was more than satisfied with his team's effort tonight on the road, "We competed well tonight on the road and showed a lot of resiliency as the game went on. Good things happen when we play hard for sixty minutes and we did that tonight. We're looking to carry this momentum into our game tomorrow against a good Tufts opponent."
The Ephs remain unbeaten and improve their overall and NESCAC record to (2-0-1). Their next game will take place tomorrow, November 23rd, 2013, in Medford, MA at Tufts University at 4pm (0-3-0, 0-3-0 NESCAC).
