PHILADEPHIA, PA – The Williams women's squash team fell 0-2 to start the weekend with two tough road losses versus Penn and Stanford. The women were unable to get a game off of any of their respective Penn opponents, but had many close matches against Stanford.
The day started off at 3 pm with the Ephs taking on Penn. The women knew it was going to be a challenge, but none were able to truly rise to the occasion and challenge their Penn counterparts. Co-captain Alyssa Northrop (#1) had a solid showing with a close first game, narrowly losing 11-8. Like her teammates though, she was defeated in three games.
Next up came Stanford – the Ephs challenging them on Drexel's courts. Many of the women had close matches, yet none were able to finish the job. Co- captain Ellie O'Neill (#4) won her first game 11-9, but dropped the next three, losing 3-1. Ellen Coombe (#5) evened the score at 1-1 after losing the first game, but was defeated 12-10 in the fourth game. Charlotte Walsh (#8) and Maria Pylypiv (#9) were also each defeated in four games. Lily Grant (#6) came the closest to getting a point for the Ephs. Grant went back and fourth with her opponent but was eventually defeated 3-2.
"We competed against two tough teams, but fought hard," commented O'Neill. "We are ready to play some good squash tomorrow."
The Ephs will continue their weekend at 10 am on Sunday when they play against an improved Drexel team. The women will then travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers at 3 pm.
