NEW HAVEN, CT – Women's squash lost in the first round of the National Champions on Friday evening at Yale University. The second seeded Ephs lost 5-4 to the sixth seed, Bates. With this loss, Williams can no longer reach their preseason goal of avenging last year's loss in the finals and winning the Kurtz cup.
The women kept it close, but they needed just one more win to advance in the tournament. Unfortunately they could not pull it out, despite strong effort.
The day started off in Bates favor, with the Bobcats taking two of the first three matches. Caroline Sawin (#6) won her match in three close games, but the Ephs were down after the first round 2-1.
The second round ended in similar fashion to the first. Bates took the top and bottom matches (#2 and #8) but Williams won in the middle with Nicole Feshbach (#5) defeating her opponent 3-1. At this point the Ephs were down 4-2, needing to come back and win the final three matches in order to defeat Bates.
Even though Hannah Kaemmer (#7) and Alyssa Northrop (#4) were able to come through with five game and four game victories, respectively, it was too little too late for the Ephs, who already gave up five matches.
Williams is not done for the weekend though and will continue battling. The Ephs face F&M on Saturday at 4 pm in the semifinals of the consolation round.
