COSTA MESA, CA -- The Williams women's tennis team picked up two wins on Thursday over Babson and Vanguard.
The Ephs took on Babson first this morning, and jumped out to an early lead in doubles play. Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylypiv won 8-0 at the number one position, and Riqui McCoy and Maya Hart won their match at number three by the same score. Veranika Li and Nancy Worley gave the Ephs a 3-0 lead with an 8-3 win at number two.
Williams continued to cruise in singles play. Three Ephs, Worley, Monica Pastor, and Riqui McCoy, were able to sweep their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Elkins, Li, and Rebecca Curran each won in straight sets as well.
It was more of the same for the Ephs in their afternoon match against Vanguard. Kara Shoemaker and Curran, and Elkins and Pylypiv each cruised in doubles play. Vanguard defaulted at the number three position.
Monica Pastor was the exclamation mark of singles play, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win at number 5. Alex Stone and Maria Pylypiv each dropped only one game, and Curran and Shoemaker each had commanding straight set victories as well.
"We played very clean tennis today," commented head coach Alison Swain. "It was great to see everyone come out strong after two solid days of practice here in California."
Next up for Williams is Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night.
