CLAREMONT, CA—Three singles wins could not save the Ephs from a deficit after doubles, as #3 Williams fell 5-4 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Nancy Worley and Veronika Li were the only Eph duo to come out of doubles play with a win, as they took the number three position, 8-5. Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran lost a tight pro-set at number one, 8-6, while Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylypiv dropped the number two spot, 8-4.
Elkins and Pylypiv quickly rebounded in singles play, as each turned in impressive straight set victories, which brought the match score to 3-3 after Alex Stone lost at number six.
Needing to win two out of the final three, Williams lost consecutively at numbers one and two to put the match out of reach. Nancy Worley made the final score 5-4 with a tightly contested win at number four.
"Claremont-Mudd-Scripps played a great match," commented head coach Alison Swain. "There were opportunities for both teams today, but CMS did a great job of capitalizing on those moments, especially in doubles. It will be important for us to bounce back tomorrow, as we have a double header against two very strong teams."
Williams will take to the courts again tomorrow with a double header against Depauw and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
