POMONA, CA-- The Williams women's tennis team finished their spring break trip on Thursday with a 6-3 loss to Middlebury.
The Ephs struggled yet again in doubles play. The number three team of Veronika Li and Nancy Worley gave Williams their best chance of winning, but would eventually fall short, 8-6. Williams trailed 3-0 after the doubles session.
Needing five of six singles matches, Williams' began to mount a comeback. Kathleen Elkins won her match 6-3, 6-1 at number three, and Maria Pylypiv and Alex Stone also earned straight set victories at numbers five and six.
Nancy Worley dropped her first set but forced a third with a 6-2 win in the second. She would go on to lose the deciding set, and 4-3 was a close as Williams would get.
"It was a tough loss today," commented head coach Alison Swain, "Middlebury came out strong in doubles and took charge of the match. I thought we bounced back very well to play excellent singles. We definitely look forard to having a week of practice back at Williams to work on some specific things before our next conference match."
Williams returns to action next Saturday on their home courts against Bowdoin College.
