WILLIAMSTOWN-- Strong singles play wasn't enough to recover from a 3-0 deficit after doubles, as the #3 women's tennis team fell to #1 Amherst 5-4.
Williams had a tough time in doubles play. Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran lost 8-1 at the number one position. Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylypiv lost 8-4, and Nancy Worley and Veranika Li fell 8-5 at number three.
Williams turned in a strong singles session, as four of six players earned wins. Kathleens Elkens, Rebecca Curran, and Nancy Worley each earned tight three set victories. Maria Pylypiv was able to win in straight sets.
"We showed great resiliency in singles today and made a great run at a comeback after doubles play," commented head coach Alison Swain. "Amherst is a very good team, but particularly in doubles this year, and I think the loss will help us focus on some areas where we can improve tactically going forward."
