WILLIAMSTOWN-- The Williams women's tennis team started off their fall duel match schedule with a 9-0 win at home over Wesleyan University.
The Ephs got out to a 3-0 start behind solid doubles play from the top team of Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran. First year Hannah Atkinson teamed up with sophomore Riqui McCoy to win at number three 8-3, and the accomplished team of Maria Pylypiv and Kathleen Elkins won 8-5 at number two.
Williams cruised through singles play, earning two 6-0, 6-0 wins from Shoemaker and Curran along the way. First year Linda Shin earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at number 5, and fellow first year Hannah Atkinson also only conceded one game en route to a straight set victory. Maria Pylypiv faced the most resistance, winning her second set 6-4.
"We really look forward to dual matches as the highlight to our fall season, so playing outdoors at home today and beating Little Three Wesleyan was a great start for us. We took charge in particular in singles and I think our returnees are already showing improvement from last spring," commented head coach Alison Swain.
Williams will travel east tomorrow for a pair of dual matches against Wellesley and Babson.
