Ephs fall short of Mules in the final minutes

Box Score

Waterville, ME--- A goal with just under two minutes remaining in a tie game by senior Colby forward, Ben Chwick, was enough for the Mules to gain a win against the NESCAC top ranked Ephs.

Coming off of a terrific weekend of outscoring their opponents 9-2 in two wins, the Ephs (10-3-2, 6-1-2 NESCAC) were back at it, yet again, in a league matchup against the Mules of Colby College (9-5-3, 6-4-1 NESCAC). The first meeting between these teams happened to be the first game of the season for both squads, which resulted in a 1-1 tie.

The first goal of the game took place just over four minutes into the opening period at the hands of sophomore Mule forward, Tyler Lingel. Lingel corralled the puck and fired a shot on net; the shot bounced off of Williams defenseman, Zander Masucci, and then found its way past Ephs goaltender, Sean Dougherty (14 saves on 16 shots). Time of the goal was 4:02 with assists being awarded to Colin Reilly and Devin Albert.

The Ephs answered before the end of the period at the 11:37 mark. Eph forward, Tyler Young, scored in an unassisted effort. Young made quick work in the corner and gained possession of the puck of the Eph offensive zone and then made his way to the top of the circle. The freshman then fired a shot on net that beat Colby goaltender, Sam Parker (31 saves on 32 shots).

After one period of hockey, the score stood at 1-1 despite the Ephs outshooting the Mules by 10-5.

The second period hosted several power plays that generated several scoring chances for both teams, however, neither team netted a goal during the second twenty-minute period. Williams again vastly outshot Colby by an even larger margin, 11-5, yet the score remained at 1-1.

The third period was hard-fought by both teams and for the majority of the frame the score remained at 1-1. It was until senior Mule forward, Ben Chwick, finished on his twelfth goal of the season. Time of the goal was 18:38 with assists being awarded to Nick Lanza and Jack Bartlett.

The final minute and twenty-two seconds played themselves out with several chances by the Ephs after pulling Dougherty from the net to gain the man advantage. The final horn sounded and the Ephs suffered only their third loss of their season to give them a (10-3-2, 6-1-2 NESCAC) record on the year. Despite the loss, the Ephs remained on top of the NESCAC standings.

The Ephs face off up in Maine for another game tomorrow, 1-24-14 at 4 pm, in another NESCAC matchup against Bowdoin (10-4-2, 6-4-1). The Polar Bears currently sit in fourth place in the NESCAC.
