Ephs Suffer First Loss, Falling 3-2 in OT to Hobart at Plattsburgh Tourney

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Hobart's Mac Olson wasted no time in ending the overtime contest when he scored an unassisted goal just nine seconds into the extra frame to lift Hobart into the finals of the Buck Supply Tournament hosted by Plattsburgh State with a 3-2 win over Williams.

With the win Hobart improved to 3-4-4 on the year, while the Ephs suffered their first loss of the season and now sport a 5-1-2 record. Hobart will play the winner of tonight's 7:00 PM contest between host Plattsburgh and Hamilton College tomorrow at 7:00 PM. The Ephs will face the loser of the 7:00 PM game at 4:00 PM tomorrow in Plattsburgh's Stafford Ice Arena.

Hobart never trailed in the contest. The Statesmen opened the game's scoring a mere 19 seconds into the first period when left winger Robert Sovik tallied his first goal of the season off a feed from Tommy Fiorentino.

Hobart took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission outshooting the Ephs 13-11.

Williams evened the score at one when senior captain Nick Anderson one-timed a pass from first year George Hunkele at 9:35 of the second period.

The score remained 1-1 at the end of the second period with Hobart holding a 24-19 advantage in shots on goal.

Hobart again took the lead when they capitalized on a power play opportunity just over six minutes into the third period. The Ephs' Frankie Mork was whistled for interference at 5:33 and 37 seconds later Hobart was on top 2-1 when Tommaso Traversa tallied a goal with assists being credited to Carl Belizario and Ryan Michel.

At 9:13 of the third period Hobart was penalized for having too many men on the ice and the Ephs went on the power play. Although the Ephs failed to convert on the man up advantage first year Sam Gray tallied his first intercollegiate goal one second after the penalty expired to tie the game at 2. Greg Johnson and George Hunkele assisted on the Gray equalizer.

Hobart's Mac Olsen ended the contest just nine seconds into the overtime session when he scored on an unassisted goal.

For the game Hobart out shot Williams 36-26 with Hobart's Lino Chimienti making 24 saves and the Ephs' Sean Dougherty stopping 33 Hobart attempts.

On the day the Ephs were 0-5 on power play and Hobart was 1-3.

"Give Hobart credit, they challenged us and pushed us the first 15 minutes of the game before we started to get some energy," said Eph head coach Bill Kangas. "The positives are we came back from down a goal twice, but as I told the boys it is now about how we respond to this tomorrow."
