AMHERST, MA – The Williams women's tennis team took on archrival Amherst today. A rivalry that runs deep in the history of both schools, this matchup always proves to be an exciting one – and today was no exception. The match came right down to the wire, with Williams squeaking out with a 5-4 victory.
Amherst jumped out to an early lead in doubles, claiming two of the three matches. Top pair Ip/Ghosh from Amherst took down ITA/USTA doubles champions Rebecca Curran and Maria Pylypiv 8-1. The freshman pairing of Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio won their match, however, 8-3. The final doubles match was a tight one, ending in a 9-7 score, as Monteagudo/Aly from Amherst defeated Hannah Atkinson and Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio. This left the overall score at 2-1 in favor of Amherst heading into the six singles matches.
In singles, it was Williams who jumped ahead. Curran and Cancio came out with 'W's, bumping the Ephs ahead in the overall score. Amherst came back to tie it up, as Ghosh beat Raventos 6-2, 6-3.
Williams would earn the lead back, and solidify their victory, though, with two wins in a row. Pylypiv won her match in three sets; 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 victory by McDonnell Nieto del Rio.
The Lord Jeffs narrowed the gap, but were too late for a comeback, as Ip took her match 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 against Linda Shin.
Williams will finish their fall season off next weekend with NEWITTS held at Mount Holyoke and Smith.
