Azusa, CA – Williams College Women's tennis maintained their undefeated record (6-0) as they started their annual Spring Break competition. Competing against Azusa Pacific (11-5), ranked 16th in the country in NCAA Division II they came away with a close 5-4 victory.
In singles competition, Williams and Azusa split 3-3. Kara Shoemaker, Linda Shin, and Maria Pylypiv all won their singles matches 7-5, 6-3; 6-1, 7-5; and 6-0, 6-1, respectively. Rebecca Curran and Hannah Atkinson fell in tough-fought matches, both needing a third set to decide the winner.
In doubles, Williams were victorious in two of their the three matches, clinching them the overall win. Shoemaker/Curran defeated Ingwaldson/Johnson 8-5, while Elkins/Pylypiv defeated Harris/Quan 8-0.
Determination was surely the difference-maker today, as only one match decided the victor. "Today's match was a very good experience for us." Said coach Alison Swain, "Azusa pushed us hard in singles in particular. We fought hard and played solid tennis to overcome [the opposition] and earn ourselves a very gritty win."
After a few days off, Williams will take on Chicago @ Whittier, California at 1pm on Thursday, March 27th.
