Claremont, CA – Williams women's
tennis took on 6th ranked Pomona-Pitzer today, hoping to
extend their win streak to 18 matches, going back to last
year. They did just that, beating the Sage Hens 8-1.
In doubles play, the Ephs came away with a win in two out of
three matches. After an initial loss, the two remaining
Williams pairs came out on top. Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran
proved a formidable force yet again, defeating Sammy Chao and Lea
Lynn 8-3. The second Williams pair of Maria Pylypiv and
Kathleen Elkins also won, 8-4.
Four Ephs made quick work of their opponents, while the senior
captains battled through their long matches to earn their Ws.
Kathleen Elkins won her first set 6-3, but Mae Coyiuto of
Pomona-Pitzer would not go away easily. Elkins fought for a
well-deserved 7-5 victory, taking the match in the second
set. Kara Shoemaker fell in her first set, 2-6, but came back
to win in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. “Our senior
captains showed incredible tenacity as the last two matches on
today”, said Coach Alison Swain.
Going back to last year, today's victory extends the
Ephs' win streak to 18 matches. They hope to get
their 19th win on April 1st, as they take on
Point Loma at 5pm.
