SPRINGFIELD, MA—In today's NEWA "Headlock for Hunger" Duals the Williams College Ephs went 3-1. Williams College started off the day with a solid victory over Trinity College by a score of 54-6. By going 3-1 on the day the Ephs upped their season record to 10-2.
In the second round, the Ephs fell to the tournament hosts, Springfield College,by a score of 22-16, but finished up the day with victories over Wesleyan, 28-13, and RIC, 31-16.
Eph head coach Scott Honecker said, "We wrestled really well for this point in the season. We obviously wanted to win the tournament, but a 3-1 result made for a really good day."
Despite not winning the tournament, the victories Williams did have were significant. Honnecker was particularly excited about the win over Wesleyan, as the Cardinals are one of the major NESCAC rivals.
Still, "the loss to Springfield was tough, and we are excited to have another shot at them in our own gym on Valentine's Day," remarked Honecker.
First year Matt Morris, sophomore Christopher Chorzepa and junior Jorge Lopez all went 4-0 for the tournament. Honnecker also noted junior Tim Garripoli as a standout wrestler this tournament. "He is dominant on top and his only loss was to the number one ranked 165 in the country from Springfield. He got us important bonus points in all his other matches," said Honecker.
Lopez's performance today also propelled the Ephs' victories. He has overcame his early season injury in strong fashion and secured big wins for the team. His win against Springfield was acknowledged by Honecker as the most significant win of the day.
Aside from the results, Honnecker was also very pleased as the team achieved the highest team GPA in the New England Wrestling Association.
Williams competes next on January 31 in the NEWA/METRO Duals where they look to continure their success and prepare for the post-season.
