Williams Defeats Middlebury 6-3

Middlebury, VT -- The Ephs traveled north for a highly anticipated contest with the Middlebury Panthers. It was a match with implications for the NESCAC championship, as both teams were vying for the #2 seed.

In the first round of matches, Captain Nick Greaves-Tunnell '15 secured the first victory for the Ephs (#9) in a close four games. On the middle court, John Shuck '17 (#6) also won in four games, while Captain Chris Wilkinson '15 (#3) lost in a close three games, giving the Williams men a 2-1 lead.

Next on court for the Ephs were Varun Sharma '16 (#8), Galen Squiers '16 (#5), and Kevin Chen (#2). Sharma battled with his opponent taking him to five games, but was defeated in the end despite giving a good effort. Squiers lost in an extremely close three-game match, but Chen was able to cruise to a 3-0 victory to keep the match even at three points a side.

In the final round, the Ephs needed at least two victories in order to secure the win. Jamie Ruggiero '17 (#1) split the first two games, but then stepped up to win the next two bringing the match to 4-3. On the bottom court, Michael Petrick '16 (#7) cruised to a 2-0 lead, and then split the next two games to secure the match for Williams. At the same time, Kai Graham '15 (#4) battled to win in a close four games, giving the Ephs a 6-3 victory. Williams also won all four exhibition matches, as Jamie Havran '18, Andrew Litvin '18, Jack McLean '17, and Mason Elizondo '18 all defeated their Panther opponents.

Eph head coach Zafi Levy said about the match: "Good performance by the boys today against a tough Middlebury side. Some of our boys played really well tonight but a few didn't. We need to play better than we did today in order to win this weekend, but we will make the necessary adjustments in order to be ready for Brown on Friday."

With the win over Middlebury the EPhs improved thier season record to 8-6.

This weekend the Ephs take on Brown and Drexel at home, before traveling to Wesleyan on Sunday for the Little Three championships.
