Men's Swim & Dive Wins Over Union

COMPLETE RESULTS

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Head coach Steve  Kuster's team competed in their own pool for the first time this season as the Dutch of Union College came to visit. The meet was the second in two days for the Ephs and Kuster commented on the team's response to this challenge. "Starting with back to back meets was a good test for us and in general I was pleased with the team's response," he offered.

The Ephs didn't look weary from the previous evening's competition in the 200 Medley Relay, the first event contested today. The top four finishes all belonged to a relay team from Williams. The first-place team of Timothy Kostolansky, Jake Tamposi, Alex McCarter and Jamie Finnegan finished in a time of 1:32.95, which would have finished fifth at last year's NESCAC Championships. Today's second place team of Benjamin Lin, Jon Yin, Zachary Ottati and Grant Johnson finished in 1:33.79, which would have finished seventh at last year's NESCACs.

In the 1,000 yard and 200 yard Freestyle, Union College's Jack Wassik grabbed a few points by finishing third and fourth, respectively. But Williams swimmers flooded the top spots. Sophomore Dan Needham took first in the 1,000 while junior Grant Johnson led a 1-2-3 Williams sweep of the 200.

In the next four swimming events before the diving break Williams tallied four more wins and three more 1-2-3 sweeps. In the 100 Backstroke juniors Colin Hogan and Zihan Su got to the wall first and were followed by freshman Zach Ottati. Senior captain Jake Tamposi won the 100 Breaststroke in 58.29, beating out Union's John Enquist. Then first-year Shahzad Mumtaz led the way in a sweep of the 200 Butterfly before his classmate Jamie Finnegan led the sweep in the 50 Freestyle.

In the diving Andrew Lyness represented the Ephs, and finished fourth in both the 1 meter and 3 meter competitions.

Then Jamie Finnegan returned to win the 100 Freestyle while senior teammates John Hammond and Nels Snyder raced for second and third places. Another Williams sweep came in the 200 Backstroke, where junior standout Ben Lin ran away with the victory in a time of 1:50.46.

Union College's John Enquist continued an impressive evening in the Breaststroke events as he won the 200 with 2:09.68 ahead of Williams' Dragan Vujovic and Knox Young.

Then Jake Tamposi grabbed a win at the helm of another 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 Freestyle. Bobby Rowledge and first-year Robby Bradford completed the sweep. The 100 Butterfly was another sweep, yet again led by an impressive performance from Ben Lin.

John Enquist won for the second time in the 200 IM ahead of Colin Hogan, Knox Young and Bobby Rowledge. Enquist's pair of victories were Union's only on the day.

In the final event of the evening, the 200 Freestyle Relay, Williams took home another victory to cap off a successful home opener.

But coach Kuster had this to say: "There has been some good work for sure, but I am confident there is more the team can give." Looking ahead to the Ephs' December 5th competition at Boston College, which is sure to be a close meet after last year's tie, perhaps more can be expected from Kuster's squad. For now, the team improves to a 2-0 record.
