Women's Squash Falls to Cornell

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA –Williams fell to Cornell 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Ephs were faced with a tough challenge from the Bears, who came into this season with a #6 national ranking. After playing two matches the previous day, the women finished their season opening weekend at home with a 1-2 record.

Williams came in as the underdog, but fought hard to force their Cornell opponents to work for their victories. Freshman Esther Baek (#6) had a strong performance the previous day and continued to make her mark as an important part of this season's team. Baek took the first game against her Cornell opponent, yet fell 3-1.

Charlotte Walsh (#4) also had a close match, following a similar pattern to her teammate Baek. Walsh won the first 11-7, but her opponent came back to win the next three games and the match. Co-captain Nicole Feshbach had one of the closest three-game matches possible: losing 15-13, 11-9 and 13-11.

Playing in the exhibition match, Celeste Lancaster (#10) was the closest to pulling off a victory for Williams. Lancaster surged to a 2-0 lead over her Cornell adversary, but could not fend off the comeback and lost 3-2.

"Despite two losses to Ivy League schools, we had a productive weekend and we now know what we need to work on to improve and prepare ourselves for our next round of matches in two weeks," commented assistant coach Blair Dils. "All the girls showed a fighting spirit this weekend, and it was great to see Esther do well at the number 6 position. She's a great pick-up and will help our team immensely this year."

"We've had some very close matches in the past couple of days against two of the top teams in the country (Cornell and Columbia)," added Feshbach. "I think we have definitely shown our potential for this season and are excited to get back on court after Thanksgiving break."

The next matches for the Ephs will be on the first weekend of December. Williams will make the trip to Princeton, NJ on Saturday, December 5th where they will play St. Lawrence at 1 pm and Princeton at 3 pm. The following day, the Ephs will play in Philadelphia, PA where they will take on Drexel at 10 am and Penn at 3 pm.
