Ephs Fall to Boston College Eagles

COMPLETE RESULTS

BOSTON, MA -- The Men's Swim and Dive team traveled to Boston College today to compete against the Division I Eagles. This meet is a perennial challenge for the Ephs, and after last year's tie at home the team was looking forward to the test. Despite bringing high energy and delivering some season best performances, the Ephs weren't able to get the win.

Senior captain Seth Montgomery commented on the meet atmosphere. "The team's energy was the highest it's been all season," he said. "It was great seeing everyone get up for each others' races. After a really tough week of practices, the energy on deck had the whole team fired up to race hard."

Things got underway with the 200 Medley Relay where Ben Lin and Jake Tamposi launched their Williams relay out to an early lead in the Backstroke and Breaststroke legs. Senior Alex McCarter was able to keep a slight lead through the Butterfly for anchor Grant Johnson, but B.C.'s Dan Kelly captured a come from behind victory for the Eagles with an impressive 19.85 Freestyle split.

Then in the 1000 Freestyle freshmen Kenny Liu continued the fast start to his college career by tracking down Eagles' Artie Hidalgo over the last 500 yards to grab second place. Sophomore Dan Needham took fifth.

The Eagles would win the next two events, the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, but Williams was able to throw up some impressive times. Grant Johnson took third in the Freestyle with a time of 1:44.49. Then in the 100 Backstroke Ben Lin turned in a 50.01, a time which ranks as the fastest in Division III swimming this year in the event.

A duo of Williams seniors finished first and second in the 100 Breaststroke to inject some energy into the Wiliams side. Jake Tamposi got to the wall first in 58.92 and was followed by Jon Yin in 59.06.

The last two events before the diving break were the 200 Butterfly and the 50 Freestyle. Sophmore Bobby Rowledge turned in a 1:57.10 that was good enough for second place in the Butterfly, while freshmen Shahzad Mumtaz and senior Peter McDonald finished in fourth and fifth, respectively. Boston College would sweep the 50 Freestyle.

Andrew Lyness finished sixth in both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events. He completed the hardest dive in his lineup, the forward 2 1/2, off of the 1 meter board.

The swimming events resumed with the 100 Freestyle where the Eagles continued their dominance in the sprint Freestyle by sweeping the event.

In the next three events the Eagles grabbed three more victories. But Williams was able to turn in some more impressive times. In the 200 Backstroke Ben Lin nearly matched his season best by swimming a 1:50.66; in the 200 Breaststroke Jon Yin, Jack Ferguson and Dragan Vujovic all clocked season best performances; finally, in the 500 Freestyle Jake Tamposi and Kenny Liu swam fast times as well.

The final two events of the evening saw two Ephs grab the top times yet posted in the NESCAC this year. Ben Lin won the 100 Butterfly in 50.59, and Tim Kostolansky dropped a 1:55.52 in the 200 IM though he would finish second.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay Williams was bested by the Eagles and would finish fourth.

Overall Boston College dominated the scoring this evening, but Williams will move on from this meet with more fast swimming under their belt and looks forward to NESCAC competition after returning from winter break. On January 9 they will face rival Amherst College in Amherst at Pratt Pool.
