Women's Squash Goes 1-1 in New Jersey

PRINCETON, NJ – Women's squash traveled to Princeton on Saturday and ended the day 1-1. After handling Saint Lawrence 9-0 at 1 pm, only dropping one game across all matches, Williams fell to Princeton, the number 3 team in the country, in a 3 pm match.

The day began against Saint Lawrence, with the Ephs playing a three-court system at Princeton. Eight of the women had 3-0 matches. Hayley Parsons (#2), after winning the first game 11-3, had a close second game. However, Parsons managed to hang on with a 14-12 victory to take the second and then finished the match off strong in the third.

Nicole Friedman (#1) started off on a roll, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the match. Her Saint Lawrence opponent came back to win the next, but Friedman maintained her composure and won the match 3-1. Playing in her first exhibition match, Susanna Wilson-Hawken (#10), had an extremely close match. Wilson-Hawken traded games with her opponent, but eventually fell 11-7 in the fifth.

"We had a very strong showing against St. Lawrence with a 9-0 win and a great extra match by Susanna (Wilson-Hawken)," commented co-captain Lily Grant. "We were pleased by our performance in the first match of our long weekend."

After a quick turnaround, Williams was back on court at 3 pm to take on the home team. The Ephs knew the Tigers would be a tough matchup. Even though Princeton opened their season today against Williams, they came into the match as the number 3 team in the country and expected to continue their dominant play this year.

None of the Williams players managed to take a game off of their Princeton adversaries. Co-captain Lily Grant (#6) was the closest, falling 12-10 in the second game of her 3-0 match.

"We had a challenging day ahead of us with two matches in four hours, but the women responded well to the challenge," added assistant coach Blair Dils. "We took care of business against an improving Saint Lawrence team, but we were a bit over our heads against a very talented Princeton team. But we played hard and are in great spirits for our match against Drexel tomorrow morning."

Williams will drive to Philadelphia to take on Drexel at 10 am and Penn at 3 pm on Sunday the 6th. The match against Drexel is one of the Ephs most important matches of the season. Williams comes into the day ranked number 12 in the country, while Drexel is close behind them at number 13. Last season, the Ephs won 6-3 in the regular season match, and they know that the Dragons have improved. The women are eager for the challenge and looking forward to fighting to maintain their ranking.
