Box Score NEW LONDON, CT — The Williams College women's hockey team wrapped up their regular season this afternoon with a 1-0 victory against the Connecticut College Camels. Freshman Kearan Burke (Shrewbury, MA) scored the game winning goal at 18:24 in the first period, assisted by sophomore Sara Lehman (Lexington, MA). Freshman goalie Christina Cleroux (New Glascow, NS) earned her 4th shut-out of the season, making 31 saves.
The Camels came out strong in the first period, out-shooting the Ephs 10 to 4. The Ephs had a power play at 11:16, but Connecticut College played strong defense to fend off Williams offense.
Williams took the lead with just over a minute left in the first period, with Burke scoring her third goal of the season. Lehman entered the zone and cut past Camels defense to take a shot on net. Burke got the rebound and scored the goal on Kelsie Fralick's (West Chester, PA) blocker side.
The Ephs played a great second period. They took advantage of three Camel penalties - coming at 1:15, 5:14 and 17:51 - to play offensive hockey and maintain their one goal lead. Williams out-shot Connecticut 11 to 7 while killing two penalties of their own.
Head coach Meghan Gillis commented, "We did a great job on the penalty kill today playing as a unit of six in the defensive zone."
Play evened out between the two teams in the third period. Cleroux led the Ephs to two more penalty kills. In the final minute of play, the Camels pulled Fralick to go up six on four against the Ephs, but were unable to tie up the game.
"We played really well as a team this afternoon, ending the game with a penalty kill. We are looking to do the same next week in the play-offs," reflected coach Gillis.
The Ephs finished their regular season with a 9-12-3 record overall, and a 6-8-2 record in the NESCAC. The Camels ended up with at 12-9-3 record, and an in-conference record of 7-7-2.
The Williams College women's hockey team is currently ranked 6th in the NESCAC, and will compete in the conference tournament, which begins next Friday.
