LEXINGTON, VA -- The third ranked Ephs (6-0) faced off against the Tigers of Depauw University (#14, 6-6) on Friday, winning the match decisively, 8-0. With the victory Williams retains an undefeated record this season, looking next to a match against top-ranked Emory University tomorrow fternoon on the campus of Washingotn & Lee University (W&L).
The Ephs played with with confidence from the start this afternoon. In doubles, sophomore Linda Shin (W) and freshman Juli Raventos (W) defeated their opponent 8-2, and were followed by the pairing of Maya Hart/Rebecca Curran who also found success at a margin of 8-2. Senior Maria Pylypiv and freshman Julia Cancio rounded out doubles play for the Ephs, overcoming DePauw's Marshall/Marshall (DU) 8-5, and carrying Williams into singles with 3-0 lead.
Williams maintained their progress in singles play, winning all foive of the completed matches. Curran, Raventos and Shin each won in straight sets, while freshman Mia Gancayco followed suit, defeating her opponent 6-3, 7-5.
Sophomore Hannah Atkinson (W) performed well, facing DePauw's Katlin Pickrel, and ultimately coming out on top 6-3, 6-3. It was the junior Alex Stone (W) who finished up for the Ephs on Friday, winning her first set 6-4, but she was unable to complete her match as the courts were needed for another match that followed in the Fab Five Tournament being hosted by W&L.
Eph head coach Alison Swain commented, "As a whole, we played focused and confident tennis today. DePauw always fights hard in our matches with them, so we felt good about pulling through in the close second sets."
The Ephs are half way through their spring break road trip to Virginia. They will face the Eagles of Emory University tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
