Ephs Defeat Carnegie Mellon, 8-1

Lexington, Va - Williams (8-0) continued to find success on Sunday, defeating top ranked Carnegie Mellon (11-5) 8-1. The Ephs extend their undefeated streak this spring and will conclude their spring break tour on Friday as they face off against Johns Hopkins on the campus of Mary Washington University.

Williams was effective in doubles play, energized by the pairing of Maria Pylypiv (W) and Julia Cancio who were able to to win an overtime match at 9-8(4). Sophomore Linda Shin and freshman Juli Raventos (W) followed with an 8-4 victory over Carnegie Mellon's Pavia/Chang, but it was the Tartans' Niccolle Torres and Brooke Tsu who were able to edge out the final match at 9-7, leaving the score at 2-1 Williams heading into singles.

The Ephs extended their lead in singles play, lifted by senior Maria Pylypiv who won her match at 6-1, 6-3. Raventos, Shin, Curran and Cancio each found success after just two sets on Sunday, establishing a 5-1 lead for the Ephs. Freshman Mia Gancayco finished the day for Williams, topping her opponent, Bryn Raschke - 6-7(3), 6-2, 10-7, and leaving the Ephs with an 8-1 victory.

Senior Rebbecca Curran commented on today's match, saying - "After coming off a huge win yesterday we knew we were still going to have to bring the intensity today to beat another top ten team, and we did exactly that. Carnegie came out firing, but we stayed solid and played well on the important points from the start on every court."
