Men's Squash Captures 17th Consecutive Little Three Title

Williamstown, MA -- The Williams men's squash team took care of business today at the Simon Squash Center, winning their 17th consecutive Little Three Title. With two back-to-back matches, Williams knew it would be a tough day, even though they were ranked higher than both opponents.

At 11:00 .a.m. Williams faced Wesleyan in the first match of the Little Three round robin. The match was played under the five-court system. In the first round of matches, Williams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three-game wins from captain Varun Sharma '16 (#8), Captain Galen Squiers '16 (#4), and freshman John Fitzgerald '19 (#2).

David Pincus '19 dropped the first game at the #6 position, but then won the next three games to put the Ephs up 4-0. Immediately after Pincus's match finished, Mason Elizondo '18 (#9) clinched the match for the Ephs with a dominating three-game win.

Williams got two more points from Will Ruggiero '19 (#7) and John Shuck '17 (#3), as they both won in four games. The final point was captured by Jamie Ruggiero '16 (#1), who won a close five-game match over a very talented Wesleyan opponent. Earlier in the weekend Ruggiero downed the Yale #1 in five games, which according to coach Levy, was one of the best matches he has ever played. After a dominating 8-1 win over Wesleyan, Williams had a few hours off until their match with Amherst.

Williams came out of the gates hungry for a victory over their long-time rival, Amherst. Williams again jumped out to a 4-0 lead with the first round matches, with quality wins from Varun Sharma, Jamie Havran, Galen Squiers, and John Fitzgerald. The Ephs then took the next four points, with stellar performances from Mason Elizondo, Will Ruggiero, David Pincus, and John Shuck. At the #1 position, Jamie Ruggiero, fatigued after two five-game matches in 24 hours, lost to a very skilled Amherst player.

In the exhibition matches, Drew Litvin '18 (#10), Drew Peisch '18 (#11), Neel Jain '19 (#12), and Jack McLean '17 (#13) all provided quality wins for the Ephs, showing the great depth of the Williams ladder.

Overall, it was a very good win for the Ephs, who showed that they belong in contention for a spot in the B division at nationals. Next up for the Ephs is a match against Brown, in Providence at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
